What Not To Do The Next Time You Color Your Hair

local hair salonChanging your hair color is a freeing experience. In as little as an hour at your local hair salon you alter your appearance and figuratively become someone else. Many women change their hair in order to mark a major change in their life whereas others do it for fun. Over the course of their life, one in four women will alter their hair color up to five times. Most change their hair color only three times.

However, like most alterations to one’s appearance, there are things you can do to enhance your appearance and things you can do wrong. Therefore, here are some of the general Dos and Don’ts when it comes to altering your hair color:

  • Don’t go too bold.
Bold colors like blue, red, and purple are fun to play with, but they can often look unprofessional if you work in a formal office setting. Stick to colors that are up to two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair color. You’ll have the same bold effect as you would dyeing your hair blue, but without the shock of the faculty lounge.
  • Don’t lighten your hair yourself.
With hair coloring, things can very easily go awry when a professional hair dresser isn’t present. Using over the counter bleach in order to lighten your hair is a good way to give yourself that orange color you never wanted. To avoid bronzing your hair, have a professional at your local hair salon take care of the highlights for you. A hair stylist at your local hair salon knows what they’re doing and you won’t have to worry about covering your bangs for work the next day.
  • Don’t go hair-first into a color.
One person’s choice of hair color may not be the best choice for you. Your skin tone (warm or cool) can have a surprising effect on how a new hair color can look on you. For instance, your naturally dark blonde hair may look great, but if you have cool-toned skin and you decide to go lighter your new hair can actually make you look sick. Look into what hair colors go best with your skin tone and try out a few temporary colors before you put all of your eggs into one basket.

Professional hair coloring can be an incredibly fun experience. However, if done by oneself and without much thought, you could end up with a hair color you never wanted. By remembering these Dos and Don’ts of hair coloring, you can be sure that the hair color you choose will look great and feel great.
